3 Critical Questions to Ask Before You Accept a Job

Job searches are grueling and can tax you mentally, emotionally and even physically. So when a hiring manager calls to offer you a position, it’s tempting to just say yes without even thinking. Before you accept a job, however, there are three critical questions you must ask.

One: Will You Enjoy What You Are Doing?

This is a question you must ask yourself, and it is important to really consider the answer thoughtfully before you accept. There are tasks in every job you will dread, to be sure. Some people despise paperwork, for example, but it’s a task you can’t really escape in many positions. Enjoying your work means your days typically go by quickly, you feel like you are making a contribution, and you rarely complain. Don’t forget that enjoyment comes not just from what you do, but where you do it. Can you truly see yourself fitting in and thriving at the organization given its values and culture?

Two: Does The Salary and Benefits Package Align With Your Expectations?

When you receive your written offer, study the salary and benefits package. Make sure it aligns with the discussions you had throughout your interview process, and more importantly, make sure you understand it.  If you have any questions at all, or if anything seems out of line with your previous conversations, call the hiring manager immediately to get your questions answered before you accept. Make sure to not only study your pay structure and health benefits, but your paid time off, expense reimbursement, signing bonuses, etc., as well. HR teams should be happy to go over the structure with you, since they want you to be completely comfortable in accepting their offer.

Three: What Are The training and Onboarding Processes?

The first few weeks on the job will set the tone for the rest of your tenure. Getting off on the wrong foot can lead to instant dissatisfaction. Does the company have a plan to set you on the path to success? Don’t be afraid to ask what your first few weeks will look like and what your new boss’s goals for you will be. Some organizations believe in a sink-or-swim mentality, while others have a much more formal method of training. There are pros and cons to every philosophy, so be sure you are comfortable with their approach before you say yes.
